Samsung 'infringed' Apple's auto-complete text patent

Apple alleges that several Samsung handsets infringe its auto-complete patent

A US judge has ruled that Samsung infringed Apple's patent-protected word recommendation technology.
The invention describes a way for touchscreen devices to suggest completed words after a user has part-typed them to speed up text input.
Experts say the ruling could have implications for other Android devices that offer the facility.
The judgement comes ahead of a trial in which both firms plan to claim the other copied several of their features.

This means that when the case comes to court on March 31, Apple is set to allege five cases of patent infringement - one of which has already been secured - and Samsung will claim four cases.Judge Lucy Koh - who presided over a previous dispute between the two companies in 2012 - also denied Samsung the opportunity to claim Apple had infringed one of its synchronisation technologies on the basis that the South Korean firm was not the first to register the idea.
News of the decision was first reported by patent consultant Florian Mueller, who has published the summary judgement in full.
Rejected argument
Apple's auto-complete patent was first filed in January 2007, days before Steve Jobs unveiled the firm's first iPhone.
It noted that the size of existing mobile phones made typing difficult and suggested offering the auto-complete function via a graphical user interface as a solution.
Samsung later claimed that the patent applied only to handsets and tablets that included physical keyboards.
However, Judge Koh rejected this argument, noting that Apple's invention had specifically described the feature being accessed via a touchscreen virtual keyboard.
"We are disappointed by the court's decision, and look forward to the jury trial, when the jury is expected to consider the claims related to the remaining summary judgment requests that were denied," said a spokesman for Samsung, referring to the fact the judge had rejected Apple's request that other claims be dismissed.
The iPhone-maker has not commented on the decision.
'Not earth-shattering'
Apple contends that several Samsung products infringe its technology, including the Galaxy Nexus handset and early versions of the Galaxy Note phablet.
The ruling means it can now seek to have these blocked from sale.
But one expert said the judgement could also have wider ramifications.

"That could include more recent Samsung devices, but it will depend whether the same methodology is being used.""This judgement has the potential to affect any mobile company that uses auto-complete functionality," said Vicki Salmon, a member of the UK's Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys.
Another patent lawyer added that the ruling was not as "earth-shattering" as it might first seem.
"This doesn't completely preclude there being other versions of auto-complete," said Andrew Alton from Urquhart-Dykes & Lord.
"For example, they could still use the keyboard rather than part of the screen to enter instructions. However, this would probably be less elegant."
The ruling may affect the negotiating stance taken by the firms at mediation talks.
Apple's chief executive Tim Cook is due to meet his counterpart at Samsung Electronics, Oh-Hyun Kwon, by February 19 to discuss "settlement opportunities".

Secrets of gravity

Secrets of gravity

Astronomers have discovered a unique triple star system which could reveal the true nature of
gravity. They found a pulsar with two white dwarfs all packed in a space smaller than Earth's orbit of the Sun. The trio's unusually close orbits allow precise measurements of gravity and could resolve difficulties with Einstein's theories.

The results appear in Nature journal and will be presented at the 223rd American Astronomical Society meeting.

"This triple system gives us a natural cosmic laboratory far better than anything found before for learning exactly how such three-body systems work and potentially for detecting problems with general relativity that physicists expect to see under extreme conditions," said Scott Ransom of the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in Charlottesville, VA.

"This is a fascinating system in many ways, including what must have been a completely crazy formation history, and we have much work to do to fully understand it."

Pulsars emit lighthouse-like beams of radio waves that rapidly sweep through space as the stars spin on their axes.

They are formed after a supernova collapses a burnt-out star to a dense, highly magnetised ball of neutrons.

Using the Green Bank Telescope, the astronomers discovered a pulsar 4,200 light-years from Earth, spinning nearly 366 times per second.

Such rapidly-spinning bodies are called millisecond pulsars - and are used by astronomers as precision tools for studying gravitational effects and other phenomena.

Subsequent observations showed the pulsar is in a close orbit with a white dwarf star, and that pair is in orbit with another, more-distant white dwarf.

Three-body systems are keenly studied because they allow competing theories of gravity to be tested.

But until now the only known triple system containing a millisecond pulsar was one with a planet as the outer companion, causing only weak gravitational interactions.

"This is the first millisecond pulsar found in such a system, and we immediately recognised that it provides us a tremendous opportunity to study the effects and nature of gravity," Prof Ransom said.

"The gravitational perturbations imposed on each member of this system by the others are incredibly pure and strong."

By precisely timing the arrival of the pulses, the scientists were able to calculate the geometry of the system and the masses of the stars.

The pulsar's inner white-dwarf companion has an orbital period of less than two days, while the outer dwarf has a period of almost a year.

The system gives the scientists the best opportunity yet to look for violations of the equivalence principle described by Einstein - which states that the effect of gravity on a body does not depend on the nature or internal structure of that body.

This was famously illustrated by Galileo's dropping of two balls of different weights from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Apollo 15 Commander Dave Scott's dropping of a hammer and a falcon feather while standing on the Moon in 1971.

Rather than drifting to the ground, the feather plummeted, falling as fast as the hammer. Without air resistance to slow the feather, both objects hit the lunar dust at the same time.

"While Einstein's theory of general relativity has so far been confirmed by every experiment, it is not compatible with quantum theory," said Prof Ransom.

"Because of that, physicists expect that it will break down under extreme conditions."

High-precision timing of the pulsar's "lighthouse" flashes will let astronomers hunt for deviations in the equivalence principle at a sensitivity several orders of magnitude greater than ever before, said astronomer Prof Ingrid Stairs of the University of British Columbia.

"Finding a deviation would indicate a breakdown of general relativity and point us toward a new, correct theory of gravity," she said.

16 Creative Ways to Make Your Facebook Timeline Cover Photo

16 Creative Ways to Make Your Facebook Timeline Cover Photo

At the 2011 f8 conference, Facebook announced Timeline — a major overhaul of the personal Facebook profiles to which we’ve all grown accustomed.
When Timeline is rolled out, your personal profile will be organized in reverse chronological order, as a “timeline” of your life, like an online scrapbook. As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says, “Timeline is the story of your life… in a new way to express who you are.”

When Will Timeline Become Available?

At this point, only those who are registered Facebook application developers have the option of converting their personal profiles to the Timeline format. And only they cansee the Timelines of others who’ve opted for it.
However, it’s quite easy to become a “developer” for purposes of getting access to Timeline. Read this article on how to quickly become an “app developer” and have the Timeline option for your profile.

The Timeline Cover Photo: A Great Opportunity for Creativity

For those with a creative bent, probably the most exciting change is the Timeline cover photo, an 851px x 315px canvas that you can fill with the image of your choice.
Inserted into the lower left of the Timeline cover is your profile photo. The fun is coming up with interesting and clever ways to have your cover photo and your profile photo interact.
For my cover photo, I simply made my profile photo the last in a chronological array of pictures of me:

Timeline Cover Photo Examples to Kickstart Your Creativity!

Many will use the cover photo to simply put up a beautiful photo or family picture. For example, Mark Zuckerberg just has his dog and his face:

Zuck's use of the Cover Photo is okay, but...
Not that there’s anything wrong with this, but it’s a missed opportunity to have some creative fun.
For instance, Kelly Cromwell’s fairly straightforward family picture becomes:

Here's a great way to get Dad into the family photo!

Creative Approaches to Your Cover Photo

There are several ways to approach the integration of your cover photo and your profile photo to create an effect:
  • Show the user observing the “action” in the cover photo
  • Create a continuation of the cover photo
  • Simply complement the cover photo
  • Extend the theme of the profile photo
  • Provide “meta” commentary for profile and cover photos.

Get Inspired by What Others Have Already Done

The following examples should help spark your imagination and give you some ideas of the possibilities.

Some Tips on How to Create Your Cover Photo

First, you can click here to download a Photoshop PSD template I made to help youcreate your cover photo.
Once you’ve got your cover photo and profile photo, you just need to add them to your Timeline.

How to Add Your Timeline Cover Photo

Just to the left of the vertical Timeline bar, you’ll see:
add a cover
Click "Add a Cover."
Once you’ve selected the image you want for your cover photo, click “Save Changes.”
Remember, the displayed size of your cover photo is 851 x 315 pixels. If you upload an image that’s more than 851px wide, it will be scaled down to a width of 851px.
If your image, or the scaled-down image, exceeds 315px in height, you have the option to horizontally position your image. Superimposed on your image you’ll see “Drag to Reposition Cover.” Just mouse over the image, at which point your cursor becomes a hand icon, and drag the image to where you want it to be, and then click “Save Changes.”

Upload Your Profile Photo

Once you’ve added your cover photo, you can upload your profile photo, which, as mentioned above, is inset on the left side of your cover photo.
The displayed size of your profile photo image is 125 x 125 pixels, but the total space taken up is 135 x 135 pixels due to the 4-pixel white border and 1-pixel dark outline. The minimum width for an uploaded profile photo image is 180 pixels.
image size
Your displayed profile photo is 125px square. The total space, with borders, is 135px square.
Once you’ve uploaded the profile photo you want to use with your cover photo, you can position it vertically (it is automatically scaled down to 125px in width) by mousing over the image and selecting “Edit Thumbnail” from the contextual menu. Then edit the thumbnail in the popup window to get it where you want it.
You can also continue to position the cover photo by mousing over it and selecting “Reposition” from the “Change Cover” contextual menu:
timeline change cover
Click on "Change Cover."

Take Advantage of this Fun Opportunity for Creativity!

It’s time to flex your creative muscles! Have fun expressing who you are in a unique and creative way.
